The fire science program is modeled after the Fire and Emergency
Services Higher Education (FESHE) model curriculum proposed by
the National Fire Science Degree Programs Committee. The program
consists of 66 credit hours: 24 hours of general education courses,
15 hours of basic firefighting skills courses, 18 hours of core FESHE
courses, and 9 hours of fire science elective courses.
The program educates students in the science of fire prevention and
control by emphasizing the development of their knowledge and
understanding of fire safety, causes, and suppression. Students are
prepared for positions as a full-time or volunteer firefighter; industrial
safety team member; or employee of an insurance company, government agency, or inspection service. The program is designed to serve
those who are presently employed by or active in a fire service organization or working with a volunteer fire department as well as those
who are new to the field. Students with related experience can apply
for program credit through the University’s prior learning assessment
